Years ago, I saw an infomercial for a specialty shampoo and conditioner blend called Wen, an extremely gentle hair and body care line created by celebrity stylist Chaz Dean. I remember thinking the product seemed great but I hesitated to pick up the phone because I had been fooled by so many other infomercials (hello skincare systems that burn skin!).
Needless to say, I was thrilled when a little package came my way of Wen’s best-selling Pomegranate Cleansing Conditioner. Now was my opportunity to see if the product could change the bad taste I had about infomercial-marketed beauty products.
Good news for Wen: I am addicted.
Wen’s Pomegranate Cleansing Conditioner is a universal cleanser formulated to add moisture without weighing hair down. It effectively cleanses and hydrates hair without stripping or robbing it of its natural nutrients and oils. It doesn’t lather at all – something that took a bit getting used to – but it truly leaves hair feeling squeaky clean without feeling dried out.
I was a bit shocked when I read the directions on the bottle that instructed me to use 16 to 30 pumps, at one time, and up to 40 pumps for longer, thicker hair. But it makes sense once you actually get to using it. Now I’ve gotten my “pumpage” down to an art: I always use exactly 18 pumps, plus an additional three pumps once I get out of the shower and dry my hair off a bit as a leave-in conditioner. It’s pretty unbelievable that one product can be used as a shampoo, conditioner and a leave-in conditioning product, but it’s not a marketing-scheme, it honestly works as all three. Also, important to note: do not use Wen in conjunction with any other shampoos or conditioners as most other brands contain sodium lauryl sulfates that strip hair of natural oils, thus defeating the purpose and the positive effects of Wen.
In the shower, you simply rinse your hair with cool water and then apply the Conditioning Cleanser to hair. Wen suggests applying it in four sections, the crown, the nape/back of head, ends to left side of hair, and ends to right side of hair. Add a splash of water and then vigorously rub into the scalp. Leave on for three to five minutes (I like leaving mine on even longer), and then rinse with cool water.
Wen products work well for all hair types, but I was especially pleased with the results on my dry locks. I’ve been using the Cleansing Conditioner for almost three weeks so far and my hair has never been so consistently sleek after styling. If that’s not enough of a reason to give Wen a go, it also smells amazing! I love the pomegranate scent and I’m excited to try a new scent next time – I’m just trying to decide between the Lavender or the Cucumber Aloe!
