Back then, I was fat. I had only wispy patches of hair on my head. And I had no teeth. The year was 1969 and I was a drooling, bald one-year-old. But I’ve always been a hippie at heart. And with the past weekend marking the fortieth anniversary of the Woodstock Music Festival, I can’t help but give a nod to the concert that I couldn’t make for obvious reasons in the best way I know how — with a bit of Bohemian style wisdom. First, here’s a song snippet that gives me a lump in the back of my throat whenever I hear it. Telling words, still so cutting. Even today.
By the time we got to Woodstock,
We were half a million strong
And everywhere was a song and a celebration.
And I dreamed I saw the bomber death planes
Riding shotgun in the sky,
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation.
We are stardust, we are golden,
We are caught in the devils bargain,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.
(words by Joni Mitchell, recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young)
