Back in the dark ages when I was an naive English major at N.C. State University, Ralph Nader came to our campus and gave a rousing speech to kick off an Earth Day celebration. After which, me, my sprightly Jack Russell Terrier, George, and a cluster of my hippie friends marched from our campus to downtown Raleigh, clanking our aluminum cans and slapping the backs of our Birkenstocks against our heels along the way. Although somewhat fuzzy toward the end, it was a fun and memorable day and one that I will likely never see the likes of again. One, because I sure as heck can’t walk that far any more and either could little 16-year-old George. And two, at a mere mention of the P word (politics) in my circles, the discussion usually takes an awkward turn, especially when it comes to the degrading state of our environment (I am still completely floored by people who believe that there is no such thing as global warming and that recycling is travesty). Okay, I’ll let them have their opinions and I’ll keep mine quietly festering in my gut and use my one vote to shout my defiance. Fine. But with Earth Day popping up its head this Sunday, April 22, let us all unite in beauty. Each day this week, I’ll sing the praises of beauty products that have woven in a love and respect for humankind and mother earth into their products. And I’ll kick the week off with Pangea Organics, a company that stands for truth, beauty and the pursuit of smelling lovely. My passion for the line started with a bottle of Pyreness Lavender Cardamom shower gel, and I’ve been a fan of their intoxicating soaps and lotions ever since. Not just for the quality of their products but for their undying commitment to integrity and ecocentric body and skincare. Pangea is available at more Wild Oats, Whole Foods and World Market stores and online at PangeaOrganics.com.
