We’ve all been there. You’re having a perfectly good hair day and then out of nowhere, an ugly red bump sprouts up on your cheek. Or, somewhere between the mad dash from the early morning workout to that last-minute meeting, your “smudge-proof” mascara is now smeared under your eyes. Arm yourself with these tools and tricks to keep beauty mishaps to a minimum.
1. Problem: Mascara smudges under the eyes
Solution: Jane Iredale Dot the i Makeup Remover Swabs, $22 at janeiredale.com.
Why: While you love your lengthening or plumping mascara, it doesn’t go all day without you looking like a linebacker at the end of the day. Touch up before happy hour with these innovative all-in-one swabs.
Tip: Keep the swabs handy when you apply makeup to dab away mascara flakes or smudges.
2. Problem: The dreaded pimple has reared its ugly head
Solution: Clearasil Pimple Blocker Pen ($9) + Covergirl Invisible Concealer ($5) + Clearasil Ultra Overnight Wash ($8), available at most mass retailers and drugstores.
Why: Salicylic acid in the Clearasil products help reduce pimple size while the concealer hides the bump as it heals.
Tip: Keep the Pimple Blocker Pen in your makeup bag and dab it on as soon as you feel a pimple forming. Dot the concealer on the blemish with a clean Q-tip to prevent bacteria from spreading.
3. Problem: Dry, itchy patches on arms and legs
Solution: Cetaphil Restoraderm Skin Restoring Moisturizer, $15 at most drugstores.
Why: Changes in humidity and temperature can bring on itchy skin or dry patches. Formulated without preservatives and fragrances, this body lotion uses a clinically tested technology to alleviate dryness.
Tip: If you’re prone to eczema, keep this lotion on hand as your first defense. Cetaphil RestoraDerm is accepted by the National Eczema Association as a daily treatment.
4. Problem: Brown splotches on arms and legs from fading spray tan
Solution: DERMAdoctor KP Duty Body Scrub, $44 at dermadoctor.com.
Why: Cell turnover doesn’t happen evenly and brown patches often form as spray tans fade. A chemical peel and microdermabrasion treatment in one, this body scrub pairs buffing beads with alpha hydroxy acids to banish dead skin and minimize discoloration.
Tip: Use the KP Duty scrub before your next spray tan to prep skin.
5. Problem: Puffy eyes from lack of sleep
Solution: Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller, $20 at most mass retail and drug stores.
Why: Diminish under-eye swelling from a sleepless night with this cooling, massaging eye tool. The rolling action of the metal balls reduce puffiness while the product imparts a hydrating, anti-aging formulation into the skin around the eyes.
Tip: Store the roller in the frig for an extra cooling effect.
6. Problem: The tattoo that never was
Solution: Dermablend Leg and Body Tattoo Primer ($25) and Dermablend Leg and Body Cover ($26) at dermablend.com.
Why: If you’re not ready to reveal your body art to mom or need to hide it for whatever reason, DermaBlend’s new Tattoo Primer followed by the full-coverage body foundation with SPF 15 will do the trick.
Tip: Both the primer and body foundation can be used to cover other skin flaws such as stretch marks, veins, scars and bruises.
7. Problem: Moist, clammy skin from indoor-outdoor temperature changes
Solution: CLEAN Moisture Absorbent Fresh Body Veil, $28 at sephora.com.
Why: Sheer or delicate fabrics can cling to skin with the slightest bit of moisture. The cotton proteins and a fresh-smelling, time-released scent in this body powder team up to absorb excess moisture throughout the day.
Tip: Lightly apply before your workouts to help wick away moisture.
8. Problem: Irritated skin from a home peel or over-exfoliation
Solution: PCA Skin Silkcoat Balm, $36 at dermstore.com.
Why: Developed as a night treatment for dry and/or mature skin, this advanced moisture balm has hydrolyzed silk to give skin an extra burst of moisture. Use it in harsh or cold climates or directly after a run-in with an irritating peel or facial scrub.
Tip: Dab it onto your lips at night to soothe chapped lips.
9. Problem: Flyaways and frizzy hairs
Solution: Pantene Pro-V natureFUSION Smoothing Crème, $6 at most mass retail and drug stores.
Why: When that stubborn bit of frizz stands on end, use this lightweight, nature-infused styling crème to make it behave. Use it on damp hair before blow drying or just a touch on dry hair flyaways.
Tip: Rub into the ends of your hair at night for an overnight hair treatment.
10. Problem: Sweaty, sticky post-workout skin
Solution: Bioré Makeup Removing Towelettes, $7 at most mass retail and drug stores.
Why: When you’ve got errands to run after workout and no time to shower, keep these in your gym bag so you can gently wipe away dirt and oil.
Tip: Keep these in your purse too to use before after-work makeup touch-ups
