Kabul Beauty School: An American Women Goes Behind the Veil is required reading around the SpaGirls office. Written by hair stylist and accidental activist Deborah Rodriguez, the story demonstrates the positive force that the pursuit of beauty can have in a troubled world. The writing is often bumpy and conversational (she is a hairdresser after all) but Rodriguez's efforts in pushing through piles of obstacles to open a beauty school amidst the cultural upheaval of post-Taliban Afghanistan are amazing. And so were those of American beauty heavyweights like Paul Mitchell haircare and OPI nail products. John Paul DeJoria of Paul Mitchell actually handled the phone call himself to confirm the donation of nearly a warehouse full of product to Rodriguez's immense undertaking. Plus, I can't even tell you how many bizarre things I learned about the secret life of Afghan women (and we thought Brazilian bikini waxes were a big deal, ha!) and the unfathomable treatment they endure. This Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7:00 p.m., Rodriguez will read from and sign copies of her bestselling book at Borders Books, 2402 East Camelback Road, Phoenix, (602) 957-6660. Admission is free, and we guarantee you that this is one stylist who will leave your head spinning from more than just a good hair cut. Check our calendar for more things to do around the Valley.
